Abstract:

Predominantly pencil sketches and watercolors of: Oregon, Washington Territory, Alaska, and some of the southern coast of Florida. Includes paintings by Frederick Whymper from the Western Union Telegraph Expedition to Alaska, and and album of "The flags of all nations", by Quartermaster Milan of the steamer Shubrick, 1864. Sketches are by C.M. Scammon and Lawrence N. Scammon.
Items related to the Western Union Telegraph Expedition of 1865-. Includes photographic portraits and some drawings, watercolors, engravings, and postcards. Scenes in California, Washington Territory, Alaska, and Utah are present, with numerous ship-board scenes, portraits of North American Indians, and some whaling scenes.

Photographs by various photographers. Most noteworthy are 1866 Alaska and Siberia views by Charles H. Ryder of the Western Union Telegraph Expedition, perhaps the earliest taken in the territory. Other photographers (chiefly of studio portraits) include many by Bradley & Rulofson and one or more by C.P. Fessenden, S.M. Fassetts, Jacob Shew, D.H. Wood, Silas Selleck, Henry Ulke, Vance's Gallery, Thwaites, R.W. Addis, Nahl Bros & Dickman, Edouart's Gallery, C.E. Watkins, Eadweard Muybridge, Taylor & Brown, Bayley & Cramer's, William Shew, C.L. Weed, J.T. Silva's Gallery, George W. Butler, J.U.P. Burnham, Giles Bishop, and W. Dyer, among others. A few views by George H. Johnson and by C.R. Savage are also present.
